Chatham–Ghent–Hudson Bus Route Extended Through May 2027

March 16, 2026

We are pleased to announce that the Chatham–Ghent–Hudson bus route has been renewed and will continue to operate twice per week, every Tuesday and Friday.

Originally launched as a pilot program in June 2025, the service has demonstrated steady and meaningful ridership. This service is ideal for those needing transportation for medical or dental appointments, trips to the Department of Social Services or for shopping in Chatham, Ghent, Hudson and Greenport. Notably, riders boarding in Hudson have utilized the service to access essential shopping destinations, including Price Chopper.

The route originates at Depot Square in Chatham, making several stops in Chatham and Ghent before heading directly to Hudson. The first Hudson stop occurs approximately 37 minutes into the trip, followed by additional stops throughout the city before the return trip to Depot Square. Service operates three times per day, every Tuesday and Friday.

Beginning April 1, 2026, a fare of $1.00 per boarding will be implemented. This modest fare aligns with other Columbia County public transportation services. During the initial pilot phase, travel was offered free of charge to encourage community participation and evaluate demand.

The Town and Village of Chatham, Town of Ghent, and City of Hudson were directly involved in the planning and development of the service. The offices of New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey and Assemblymember Didi Barrett were instrumental in securing a $200,000 grant that funded the original pilot program.

Printed brochures remain available at the Chatham and Ghent Town Halls and the Village of Chatham offices. Riders can also view and download route information by visiting the Columbia County Public Transportation website at:

While public transportation can be challenging to build and sustain in rural, low population density areas, these services remain critical for residents who do not drive or cannot afford private transportation. The bus service continues to connect Columbia County residents with essential services, shopping, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

Extending the period of service for this route underscores the municipalities’ shared commitment to improving accessibility and mobility across the region.
