Food Pantry

The Ghent Food Pantry is open Monday-Thursday 9:00am-noon, on days that Town Hall is open for business. NOTE: The Pantry is also closed if the Chatham Central School District is delayed or closed due to inclement weather. Our mission is to serve members of the Chatham Central School District experiencing food insecurity.

The Food Pantry is run by volunteers and funded by donations from individuals, organizations, churches and through minor grants. The donations are used to purchase the food and products which are distributed in monthly orders. We buy what we distribute.

We order and buy the food from the Regional Food Bank. Following their guidance, we ensure each order has the recommended number of servings from the 3 food groups. In Spring/Summer we provide fresh vegetables through Long Table Harvest (https://www.longtableharvest.org/). We also receive food donations from organizations, local farmers, school food drives, and neighbors; Price Chopper donates baked goods. These donations are included in our monthly distributions or made available for families to take as needed.

How We Operate

The Pantry is staffed by roughly 20 volunteers. Volunteer roles include interacting with clients, filling orders, stocking shelves, conducting inventory and ordering food and supplies. With some overlap, there is a very hard-working crew of about 15 people some of whom go to Hudson each month, load personal pick-up trucks with our order from the Regional Food Bank, bring it to Town Hall and help offload it into the Pantry. To put this effort into perspective, some monthly orders exceed 3 tons, or 6,000 pounds.
