The Town of Ghent Highway Department is seeking a dependable, hardworking individual to join our team. We’re looking for someone who is self-motivated, eager to learn, and ready to take on a variety of responsibilities in heavy highway construction and maintenance.
Position Overview: Motor Equipment Operator
This is a hands-on role involving all aspects of highway and infrastructure work. The ideal candidate is adaptable, willing to learn, and takes pride in doing the job right.
Responsibilities Include
- Assisting with road construction, repair, and maintenance
- Operating and maintaining heavy equipment (or willingness to learn)
- Performing manual labor in all weather conditions
- Supporting snow and ice removal operations
- Transporting equipment, materials, and supplies
- Operating trucks, tractors, plows, graders, rollers, and related equipment
- Loading materials, cleaning culverts, erecting snow fences, and general labor tasks
- Following safety procedures and working as part of a team
Qualifications
- Strong work ethic and reliability
- Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new skills
- Ability to perform physically demanding work
- Valid driver’s license (CDL Class B required or willingness to obtain)
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to follow instructions
- Experience in construction or heavy equipment operation is a plus, but not required
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual raises with room for growth
- Up to 4 weeks of vacation
- 80 hours of paid sick time annually

- 4-day (10-hour) work schedule spring through fall
- 5-day (8-hour) work schedule during winter, with overtime and comp time (up to 50 hours)

Civil Service Information
This position follows Columbia County Civil Service requirements for Motor Equipment Operator. Candidates must meet minimum qualifications, including experience operating automotive equipment and possession of (or eligibility for) an appropriate New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment.
The role includes operating trucks and heavy equipment for snow removal, road maintenance, and material transport, along with performing related manual labor duties.
